Trends in design come and go. But… where do they come from? How do you know which ones are worth paying attention to and not just some fad? Is everything a never-ending cycle?

In this episode of the Klaviyo Design Podcast, we discuss how design trends play a role in our work. We also reflect on which upcoming trends in style and user experience are worth paying attention to and which ones are better left behind in the fad category.

On this episode:

  • 🧐 How to identify a meaningful trend from a sea of fads
  • 💎 Understanding the cyclical nature of trends
  • 🍎 The impact of tech companies influencing the design
  • 📈 Rising trends to watch out for in 2021:
    * More attention on design to prevent misinformation;
    * Privacy controls brought to the forefront;
    * Health devices and the quantified self,
    * Algorithm-driven experiences
  • 📉 Trends that are (hopefully) on their way out:
    * Neumorphism
    * Lack of affordances from the flat design era
    * Icons that sort of all look the same

Feedly

I still use the good old RSS feeds to keep tabs on websites that I care about. Always found more interesting content via RSS from hand-picked sources instead of relying too much on algorithms. Algorithms foster a “hive mind” mentality, its good to break away to see new perspectives. — Gui Schmitt

Omsom

Beautifully designed, Asian spice starter kits with a fun and loud personality. They tell cool stories with their products. — Don Ton

Watch Dogs: Legion

I love open-world videogames, and this one looks great! It's set in a futuristic London, with tons of real-world landscapes to explore. — Adeniyi Sonoiki
